Tammy's Song

We were young by the airport lights Jet trails cutting up the night You wore your hair like summer dared you I still see it when I dream Your laugh came through the chain-link fence.

[Verse 1]

We were young by the airport lights

Jet trails cutting up the night

You wore your hair like summer dared you

I still see it when I dream

Your laugh came through the chain-link fence

My heart was all incompetence

I’d walk the long way past your window

Like wanting could be seen

[Pre-Chorus]

I thought time was a runway

And every plane came home

I was old enough to want you

Still too young to let you know

[Chorus]

I never had you

I never had you

Still your name lives in my chest

Like a song I can’t forget

I never had you

I never had you

We were almost more than friends

Then the sky took what was left

[Verse 2]

You had dreams with foreign names

Boarding gates and bigger days

I had work boots, borrowed money

And a town that held me down

You sent one picture from the coast

I kept it longer than most

You looked happy, I looked harder

For the girl I knew somehow

[Pre-Chorus]

I thought we’d meet again

At twenty-five or thirty-two

But life kept changing all the roads

That might have led to you

[Chorus]

I never had you

I never had you

Still your name lives in my chest

Like a song I can’t forget

I never had you

I never had you

We were almost more than friends

Then the sky took what was left

[Bridge]

Now I hear the engines climb

Over roofs we left behind

And for one breath I am younger

With your shadow next to mine

Maybe you found a softer life

Maybe you’re someone’s porch light

Maybe you don’t think of me

When the planes come in at night

But I do

God, I do

[Final Chorus]

I never had you

I never had you

Still your name lives in my chest

Like a prayer beneath my breath

I never had you

I never had you

Some loves don’t land where they’re supposed to

They just circle overhead

[Outro]

Tammy by the runway

Tammy in the blue-grey dawn

All these years and all these miles

And somehow you’re not gone
