[Verse 1]

The pit wakes up in rain

Muddy boots and broken seams

Yellow beasts crawl through the clay

Like they too are having dreams

I lace my hands in tar

And I taste the iron in the air

The hills are cut to pieces now

And nobody says a prayer

[Pre-Chorus]

The water runs red-brown

Down the ribs of the land

We shovel for a living

With the weight of another man's plan

[Chorus]

Yellow cut, cold rain

Yellow cut, cold rain

We go down, go down again

(Go down, go down again)

Oh hold me, brother

Oh hold me, sister

The ground don't love us

It just remembers us

[Verse 2]

At dawn the loaders roar

And the trucks make their endless line

Old men cough in the changing room

With the wet on their clothes and spines

I saw a crane stand still

In a sheet of African rain

Like a saint made out of steel

Waiting on a wound that won't heal

[Pre-Chorus]

The spoor of the ore

And the lash of the wind

We dig where the dust was

Then the rain comes back again

[Chorus]

Yellow cut, cold rain

Yellow cut, cold rain

We go down, go down again

(Go down, go down again)

Oh hold me, brother

Oh hold me, sister

The ground don't love us

It just remembers us

[Bridge]

[Fiddle]

There's a field my mother knew

Before the blades came through

Now the puddles hold the sky

And the sky won't answer why

[Final Chorus]

Yellow cut, cold rain

Yellow cut, cold rain

We go down, go down again

(Go down, go down again)

Oh hold me, brother

Oh hold me, sister

The ground don't love us

It just remembers us

Yellow cut, cold rain

Yellow cut, cold rain

And the rain keeps falling

On the ones who never came home
